This bird is a friendly and sociable species that can be found in many open environments such as farms, parks, and even gardens. The male is easily identifiable with its long tail and bright reddish beak. During non-breeding periods, both male and female have streaks on their upper chest and a boldly striped head, an orange-pink beak, and dark legs. In breeding periods, the female’s beak becomes dusky. Young birds are generally dull brown in color. This bird has a variety of vocalizations including “zhweet,” “chee-chee-chee-chee…,” and a sad-sounding “seeeeoooo,” along with various chirps and buzzes.
